For 93 years The Garden Club of Old Greenwich has nurtured interest in the cultivation of plants and flowers and promoted the preservation and improvement of gardens and community spaces. 

1924

Began a campaign to improve the landscaping at the railroad station and its approaches.


1929

Joined Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut, Inc. (FGCCT) and National Council of State Garden Clubs, Inc.


1931

Helen Binney Kitchel petitioned successfully to change the name of Sound Beach to Old Greenwich.


1932

Began Arbor Day plantings of dogwoods, evergreens and bulbs at Old Greenwich School.


1935

Planted trees, bushes and hundreds of bulbs at Tomac Historic Burying Ground.


1937

Worked with Connecticut Highway Department to landscape the Welcome Center on the Merritt Parkway.


1941

Persuaded town officials to widen Sound Beach Avenue railroad underpass from one lane to two.


1945

Restored Mrs. Tod's Secret Garden at Greenwich Point, now called the Seaside Garden.


1962

Donated a walnut table to the National Council of State Garden Clubs, Inc., in honor of Mrs. Kitchel.


1965

Designed, constructed and planted the Bush-Holley Herb Garden with the Greenwich Historical Society.


1974

Published "Trees to Remember," by Mary Jane Nickerson.


1984

Began the planting and maintenance of window boxes in the Village and at the railroad station.


1986

Planted European hornbeams on Arcadia Road. Plans initiated with town and state officials for the creation of Gateway Garden on Sound Beach Avenue and the Post Road.


1987

Measured great trees in and around Greenwich in collaboration with New London College Arboretum.


1991

Established Garden Therapy programs at local nursing homes and rehab centers.


1994

Restored landscaping at Merritt Parkway Welcome Center.


1998

Accepted responsibility for town-owned property south of I-95 on Sound Beach Avenue. huh?


2000

Initiated Juniors Program at the International School at Dundee.


2002

Began planning and initial preparation for Butterfly Garden at Greenwich Point.


2003

Began restoration project of the Adams Family Burial Ground. Presented “Alice in Wonderland," a Small Standard Flower Show.


2006

Began restoration of Butterfly Garden at Greenwich Point. Planted 2700 spring bulbs in Binney Park as part of Binney Park Beautification Project. Presented "A Ballet Garden Fantasy," a Standard Flower Show.


2009

Presented a Standard Flower Show: "ON LOCATION" LIGHTS ... CAMERAS ... ACTION.  Planted daffodil bulbs on the hillside opposite Perrot Library with the Old Greenwich Association


2012

Presented a small standard flower show "It's a Shore Thing" at the Innis Arden Cottage at Greenwich Point. Worked with the Village Improvement Committee to plan, plant, and maintain the Village sidewalk gardens.


2014

Established the GCOG Information Booth at Old Greenwich Farmer's Market. Revamped the GCOG website.


2015

Participated in Greenwich's 375th Anniversary parade. Planted an Arbor Day oak tree at the Old Greenwich School.


2017

Replaced planters in Old Greenwich village. Participated with P&Z regarding over-development of Old Greenwich adversely affecting residential neighborhoods. Increased liaisons with Riverside Garden Club, Shippan Point Garden Club and Stamford Garden Club.


2018

Presented a small standard flower show - "Georgia O'Keefe." 


2019

Established the Port of Entry Garden south of the Old Greenwich Train Station.
