GCOG has been offering the rich blue Camassia leichtlinii ‘Caerulea’ bulbs since our first bulb sale, and we are pleased to see them gracing more and more Greenwich gardens.

These Pacific Northwest U.S. natives took a trip abroad and were adopted by the Europeans. Their blue blooms have graced their gardens for decades and know they are becoming more and more popular in their homeland.

There are too few blue flowers in May and early June, and camas work hard to fill the gap. Clusters of linear strappy foliage around upright racemes studded with dozens of six-petaled, 2", star-shaped blue flowers with yellow anthers and whisper-green centers.

They look stunning with late tulips, iris, and peonies. They have a naturally upright form and they are perfect cut flowers. The flowers open sequentially from the bottom to the top, so they look fresh for a long time in the garden or the vase.

They find our summers to be a bit too much, so they perennialize best in more moist spots with deciduous tree shade.

Sorry about their formal names, but these bulbs aren’t really common enough to have common names!
