Amsonia hubrichtii
Size / Sun / Conditions
3–4' tall and wide. Full sun to light shade. Average to dry soil once established.
Threadleaf bluestar is prized for its soft, needle-like foliage, which creates a fine, cloud-like texture in the garden. Pale blue, star-shaped flowers appear in spring, but the real show comes in fall, when the entire plant turns a luminous gold. Tough, deer-resistant, and long-lived, it is an excellent structural perennial for sunny borders and naturalistic plantings.
After flowering, the feathery foliage continues to provide texture throughout the season, before shifting to a soft yet vibrant gold that is truly a standout. Amsonia hubrichtii is a cornerstone of the native garden at the New York Botanical Garden, a testament to both its beauty and reliability.
